Hairstylists play an important part in everyone’s lives
From taking care of your hair and helping you feel your best, to being a listening ear for when maybe you just need to vent and
let off some steam in a 1-to-1 environment, there is so much more to hairstylists than meets the eye. In this column I’m going to delve into some facts that will leave you in awe of your hairstylist. So whether you're a hair enthusiast, a professional in the industry, or you just want the inside scoop of the life behind the chair, then grab a drink, a snack and get comfy because here we go!
HAIR STYLISTS UNDERGO YEARS OF TRAINING!
When started training I noticed that so many girls chose hair because they saw it as the 'easy' course. Most of those girls now don’t do hair. What you don’t see is the months and years that you have to put into hair. When you're training you're basically a cleaner, maid, barista and all for minimum wage. You're extremely under valued (this depends on where you work of course) but this can all go on for 2-3 years.
I cant explain to you how many nights I would go home crying because I just felt so unappreciated when I was putting my all into getting my certificate.
You have to learn such a variety of techniques from; cutting and colouring, to learning how to properly look after each hair type.
You have to love this job with your whole heart to get the results you want.
HAIR STYLISTS ARE GREAT LISTENERS.
A significant part of my job is to be a listening ear and to be a friend, not only do I need to understand what you want to achieve with your hair and what your needs and preferences are, I also need to understand you as a person. We build strong relationships with you and become a trusted friend. The part that you wont see is we are figuring you out your home life, work life, hobbies, your likes and dislikes. If you ever analyse us closely you will see that we also change our personality and our body language depending on our clients.
I have clients who are going through difficulties in life and will open up on all levels, to offload and release tension. Then I have clients who are ‘happy go lucky’ and takes life as it comes and wont let anything negative effect their lives.
Both clients bring me joy but my personality and body language needs to mimic these people individually, to connect with them on a deeper level, to be supportive and to make the appointment be a great experience for both of us.
WE ARE GREAT MULTITASKERS.
I have made multitasking look so easy over the years!
During a typical day we have to attend to clients, manage appointments, provide consultations, keep on top of social media, stock, time management, try to keep up with trends and juggle our own lives outside of work. So please be kind to your hair stylist and understanding when you don’t get a reply from us within seconds.
Not only do we have to do all of that, but we also have to prioritise hygiene and safety in the salon. We have to prevent any risk of infections...
We have to identify infections to protect ourselves and other clients from everything from headlice to viral blood-borne infections (I could add pharmacist to my CV at this point!)
APPRECIATE YOUR STYLIST
Remember we are hairstylist, therapists and scientists, with a dash of pharmacist. Next time your sat in your stylist chair make sure to appreciate the skill, expertise and talent that goes into giving you a great barnet!
MY TIPS & TRICKS :
BANGS : When you get bangs for the first time they can be annoying. You need a medium/large roller and the same size round brush, when blow-drying. Blow-dry like a full fringe, and allow to cool when you come to take the roller out. Finger your hair back, fix your parting if needed and you have perfect bouncy, flicked bangs.
COLOURING: You CANNOT over backcomb when doing a balayage! The more back comb the better I always say!
HAIRCARE : Make sure you’re taking care of your scalp as well as your ends. You need to nourish the new hair as well as the old hair. I love rosemary oil for my scalp every 1-2 weeks. (Ask your stylist for a dermabrasion to eliminate flakey scalps). You take care of your skin so why wouldn’t you take care of your scalp?
‘If you’re thinking of becoming a stylist, make sure that you are ready to pour all your love and creativity into your work, and just know that it isn’t a smooth road to get that certificate. But we have all been there and it is so worth it in the end.’
